This Fifties wingchair – with its sharp, exciting angles – was commissioned by the wonderful Winter’s Moon – an independent homeware and gifts shop, known for their creative window displays on the Chichester high street. They specialise in all sorts of gorgeous vintage, fairtrade and handmade things that you can check out here.
This particular chair was made by the Lancashire mattress company Rest Assured somewhere between 1953-1977. A metal company label was found inside the chair along with a British Standards label stating BS1960. British Standard labels show that the makers hold a valid furniture production licence, and this particular ‘mostly wood products’ version only existed during the above dates. It would be safe to place it earlier rather than later due to the Fifties aesthetic, natural fillings and style of the original covers.
There’s limited information about the Rest Assured company online. Beginning as bed makers in 1898, they are still making mattresses in Lancashire today, as one of Silent Night’s official manufacturers. How this wing chair came about we may never know, perhaps they were trying to capitalise on the demand for affordable modern furniture after WWII.
This particular design was likely influenced by America’s effect on British tastes as TV became more commonplace in homes. The rusty red of this wool blend fabric by Camira is a great choice by Winter’s Moon.
