This smart pair of armchairs were designed as part of a suite called the Westminster Range. It was enjoyable deconstructing the design whilst recovering the upholstery and discovering some interesting new things about our rich furniture history.
Knightsbridge are a British contract furniture company established in 1939 by Dr Arnold Moore who dedicated his life to the business. They no longer produce any domestic ranges but in the Seventies they would have been available from various department stores nationwide, and deserve to be better remembered. Definitely worth keeping an eye out for the Knightsbridge sticker.
An email exchange with Knightsbridge reveals that they believe the Westminster suite, which had a popular run into the 1980’s, was designed by Robert Meyrick Box. He was with the company for 32 years and fulfilled the important role of Design Director. These chairs were designed with comfort in mind and now have plenty more years of service ahead of them in their glamorous new coats.
