        Ercol 427 Easy Chairs

        Ercol 427 Easy Chairs

“The ERCOLion’s entirely new comfort principle – FREE FLOATING SITTING”

The 427 Easy Chair appears in the 1956 and 1965 brochures which can be found at the brilliant Archive | ercol. The design doesn’t need a cross rail which leaves the cushions suspended mainly on the rubber Pirelli webs.

Ercol is known for its outstanding joinery and these are sturdy little chairs. Sally’s two still had their original upholstery which was templated with measurements-only so she could keep them intact.

The Pirelli webbing had started to fail so all of those were replaced properly and new reflex foam pads fabricated. Otherwise, the main attraction on this project is the fabric sourced by Sally herself.

“Clouds” was designed by Duncan Grant of the Bloomsbury Group and is still available from Charleston. This group is particularly interesting as they were artists who innovated homeware design. Frustrated at the lazy trend of stealing imagery from famous artists and “plonking” it on to things, they believed collaboration directly with artists was the key to producing beautiful things.
